A Westridge artist is spreading the gospel through rap.

Luigi April is currently promoting his album Sy Genade and will be at Mabra’s Clothing’s #FashionSundae event in Delft on Sunday.

The rapper started his musical journey as a singer in primary school, but by the time he hit his tweens, he was already putting poetry to music.

Later in his teens, at the age of 16, Luigi joined the band Arcades with a family member. He also sang gospel music for the acapella group Dynamic Friends on the Move (DFOM), but says it wasn’t until he gave his heart to the Lord in 2004 that he found his true purpose.

Influences by groups like Prophets of Da City and Black Noise, Luigi started writing gospel rap.

Sy Genade is an album form the heart. “It’s about how God’s grace can be sufficient for me and the struggles of life,” Luigi says, adding: “He brought me through.”

He also says the album is made up for songs for everyone and he believes: “God called me to bring young and old together to destroy the misconception around rap music in the church.”

Luigi has been promoting the album at schools, functions, youth conferences, art festivals and through a Southern Cape tour with Eden FM. He says his music has been received well by young people in particular.

He’s also just worked with Blixem Productions to reshoot his music video for the single “Hier kom ’n ding” thanks to a sponsorship from KykNET. His first video didn’t quite fit the channel’s specifications, so they offered to help him shoot another one. The video should be aired for the first time sometime in the coming weeks.

Sunday’s #FashionSundae is a chance for local up and coming fashion designers to showcase their work. The designers will be joined by local MCs, DJs and other performers and Luigi says the day promises to be a fun outing for the whole family who are encouraged to bring picnic chairs and baskets to make a day of it.

The event takes place at Leiden Section 20 in Delft from 12:00 to late and tickets cost R30 or R50 for VIP options from Mabra on 074 720 1541. Luigi will also be selling his album for R60 while guests will be able to browse goods from local designers.
