Peter Clarke’s Sandy Bay painting is going under the hammer for R1.5m.

This is a record price for Clarke’s painting which has never been viewed by the general public.

The auction will be at Stephan Welz & Co in Constantia on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The viewing of this painting is on until Sunday.

Sandy Bay is a large-scale work measuring 45 by 60cm.

The 1969 artwork represents Clarke’s stylistic ouvre and also his anti-apartheid stance. The oil and sand on board painting, presented by Clarke to a close friend as a wedding gift in the early 1970s, was sold to its current owner and has never been exhibited.

Born in Simon’s Town, Clarke was intimately involved in the Cape Town arts community for many years, organising many exhibitions and cultural events. He was forced to move to Ocean View under the Group Areas Act. He died in 2014.

Sharing the exhibition room is rapidly rising star Nelson Makamo.

Stephan Welz & Co set a record for the artist at auction with Girl with Balloons, which sold for R347 880 in March.

Now it’s the turn of Girl with Attitude, an oil, charcoal, watercolour and pastel on paper work which will be on auction for an estimated price of R200 000 to R250 000.

Anyone who can’t attend the auction in person can bid for pieces online at www.the-saleroom.com and www.invaluable.com.
