Melissa Magiera (22) from Plumstead – who was recently crowned the winner of Top Model South Africa – says to make it to where you want to be, you must believe in yourself and work hard no matter what it takes.

With her career in modelling soaring to new heights, she says she has always wanted to do modelling full-time and she is grateful to a friend who tagged her on social media when Top Model SA was doing their search.

“I was tagged on Facebook and I responded to the post. I’m grateful I did and it turned out to be an amazing experience. I had no doubt that this was going to open doors for me and it really did. It put me on the map,” she says.

Now Magiera has her eyes set on Top Model Worldwide in London. She is leaving for this competition on Sunday 1 April.

“I’m looking forward to it. I will be away for about two weeks and coming back from there I will have to travel and I’m so excited and overwhelmed at the same time,” she says.

She started modelling in Grade 10 and she hopes that one day she can do it full-time. She completed her degree in management and she says it was something she did just to fall back on.

“I worked hard. I sacrificed a lot and told myself I will do it. I had to miss going out with friends and had to eat healthily to keep that perfect body. I’m happy that all the hard work and the sacrifices are now paying off. Five years ago I didn’t even imagine that I would be a Top Model winner in SA and later on be going to compete in London,” she says.

Magiera says the only way to make it in life is to be consistent. “Know what you want in life. Work on it. No-one can tell you can’t because of your circumstances. Believe in yourself and keep pushing. Everything else will fall into place.”

She is also grateful to her mother, who has been extremely supportive. “My mom has been my everything and has supported me throughout. Though she might be a little anxious about her little girl going away, I know she is proud. I’m looking forward to this journey and I know I’m exactly where I have always wanted to be,” says Magiera.
