In a bid to reach out to residents in need, a bi-monthly feeding initiative has been launched in Tafelsig.

Local government officials, including councillors, assisted in the feeding scheme on Saturday 14 April, run with the support of the Wheatfield Foundation and Food For Life South Africa.

Ricardo Mackenzie, member of provincial parliament, says: “We partner with various organisations to provide social relief to the people of Mitchell’s Plain. We know that the economy is not doing so well and I approached various NGOs to assist with temporary relief. I have worked with Food For Life in the past and always welcome the assistance they provide to the people of Mitchell’s Plain. We were able to feed hundreds of people and we will continue to provide relief. As the winter months approach we know more people will be destitute and we will try and provide meals more frequently.”

Mackenzie also thanked the volunteers from Tafelsig High School, led by Cassondry Charles, who assisted on the day.

Food For Life SA is affiliated to Food For Life Global, which is the world’s largest vegan food relief programme, serving more than one million meals per day, and is funded mainly by donations and corporate grants.

Currently the organisation distributes around 10 000 meals per day in Durban and surrounding areas and has held various initiatives in Cape Town, including an eye clinic in Tafelsig and outreach projects in Nyanga and Philippi.

Their aim is to further address poverty and they therefore not only provide food, but also use their affiliated programmes to address issues such as education, environmental health and sustainability, and
healthcare.

Through this, one of their main goals is to eradicate hunger and malnutrition by providing vegetarian meals to the disadvantaged within South Africa.

The Wheatfield Foundation is a non-profit organisation that supports community organisations and is currently funding bursaries for students in Mitchell’s Plain.

The organisation there to help approved public benefit organisations, individuals and entities which carry on public benefit activities, and individuals deserving of assistance and support for charitable, educational, religious, cultural and social
reasons.
