Refuse contract awarded

2016-06-14 06:00

A new contract has been awarded for the collection of refuse in the far south.

The contract will include the area from Muizenberg, south along the coast to Simon’s Town, and west over the mountain to Kommetjie and Scarborough as well as Ocean View and Noordhoek, says Mayco member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg. The contract is valued at around R1.5m per month.

The contract, awarded to Tedcor, will commence at the beginning of July. The previous contract came to an end and was not cancelled, Sonnenberg emphasises.

“The contractor was not changed. The current contractor has been operating on an extension of that contract,” he says.

“A competitive tender process, managed by our supply chain management department, was followed to appoint a contractor to provide the waste removal service. Tedcor meets all the tender requirements and has been awarded the contract.”

False Bay Subcouncil chairperson Felicity Purchase says there have been complaints from residents over previous contractors on issues such as late collections and damaging bins.

However, Sonnenberg says there were “no major complaints, other than normal operational challenges such as non-removals and late removals due to refuse compactor breakdowns, which is a normal occurrence in the industry”.

“Any complaints from residents are addressed via reports to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089, where customers are provided with a reference number. The City has supervisors monitoring the performance of the contractor who immediately address any form of deviation or transgression in respect of compliance and performance,” he says.

The new contractor will continue to use local labour.

“The contractor will recruit labour from the area via the City’s job seeker database at the relevant subcouncil offices,” Sonnenberg adds.

Purchase appeals to residents to “be patient” during the initial stages of the contract and log any complaints or concerns by contacting the call centre or the subcoucil offices.
