“The art is contemporary yet relatable,” says local artist Katherine Hamilton, explaining her decision to embark on an entrepreneurship venture in Wynberg.

She has brought together her friends to make her dream of opening a Hamilton gallery come true.

Hamilton says she saw a gap in the art industry and wanted to bring something different, fitting in with different personalities, resulting in the opening of the Hamilton Gallery.

“The idea had been emerging for a year or two. I contacted all of the friends, most of whom have known each other well for a long time. I asked Elise Wessels to be the curator of our first show. Lyndon Daniels, fellow artist, came on as a partner and consultant.

“I wanted to create an atmosphere that was informal, but still sophisticated and stylish. A place that is casual enough for people to feel happy to visit, sit over a coffee and do some emails or read. I also had the vision of people coming to the gallery to meet with friends or colleagues, as a stop-off place to have a break or a meeting with a view of artworks of various mediums.”

Having opened the gallery last month, Hamilton, along with her friend, managed to launch their first show titled Linea Nigra, expected to continue until Saturday 13 October, from Tuesdays to Fridays from 09:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00. “Elise decided on Linea Nigra as a theme inspired by the black line showing on a pregnant woman’s belly.”

Hamilton explains the theme symbolises the birth of the gallery as well as the continuous thread that binds all of the artists, their histories and their artworks. She says many of the artworks have black linear elements that connect them to one another and to the theme, showing a deep connection among the artists and their shared passion for creating art.
