Thanks to generous donations from the public, local organisations joined forces to offer relief to the Douglas family after a devastating fire last month.

A call was first put out by Melissa Smith of Differently Beautiful and an official handover took place on Sunday 25 November (“House goes up in flames”, People’s Post, 13 November).

“Not only are they my neighbours, they were a family in need who needed assistance from not only me as a neighbour, but from the community as a whole and the best way we could achieve this was through Differently Beautiful,” says Smith.“Through Differently Beautiful it was possible to get the message out on a much larger platform than if I had done it in my personal capacity.”

Swallows Flight Motorcycle Club and Throttle Maniacs assisted in the handover and collection drive.

Among the donations were clothing, food, toiletries, shoes and other much needed items. The City of Cape Town has also assisted the family in building a structure on their property.
