Visitors to Rondebosch Library will experience interruptions as it will be undergoing renovations.

The renovations are expected to commence on Monday 23 July and will continue for eight weeks.

Mayco member for safety, security and social services, JP Smith, says the renovations follow after reports of major roof leakages.

“Currently the library is experiencing major water leaks due to the condition of the roof. The leaks have also caused some damage to the interior of the building which will not be repaired at this stage. The entire roof will be replaced in the new financial year,” Smith says.

Upon completion of work, it is reported that the library will reopen its severely affected magazine room which had to be closed a while ago due to damages.

Akeela Gaibie, the manager, confirmed that renovations will be taking place but she referred all enquiries to the City of Cape Town.

According to ward councillor Ian Iversen, the overall work will cost over R2m and will be accumulated from the current financial year and the 2018/2019 financial year.

Iversen says the upgrading of the library infrastructure is the beginning of most of the work that needs to be done to make it a safe, fully functional facility.

He says: “While I am most grateful for the proposed upgrading of the library, the immediate area around the library is also important.

“I have asked the electricity department to repair the street lights that are not working. The station is on the doorstep and it is vital that Metrorail maintains the subway and the station area. Rondebosch Market certainly needs upgrading and I have requested officials to replace the existing notice board, replace all the perspex sheeting and paint where necessary.”

He says the council has already started enforcing parking rules in front of the library.

“It is now being managed to prevent illegal long-term parking.”
