Report cable theft to cops

2017-07-04 06:00

Police have recently seen an increase in the theft of water meters and copper cables.

In one case, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Deborah Close, Tafelsig two weeks ago when police found a bag of copper pipes in his house.

Mitchell’s Plain police received information on Tuesday 20 June at 15:30 that he had stolen property in his possession and when they searched the house they found the bag.

Lately police have also received reports of stolen water meters.

“We are calling on the community to report all incidents of theft and damage committed against property that is of the public interest. This is a serious crime which is prosecutable. These thefts have a negative impact on the economy,” says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams.

“The theft of copper cables is often followed by a loss of service delivery as services have to be suspended, for example on train services or telephone lines. We urge the community to safeguard our public services and report these criminals without delay.”

He says the damages often run into hundreds of thousands of rands when thieves damage expensive equipment to get copper that will ultimately be sold for a few rands.
