The national crime statistics for the 2017/2018 financial year were released by the South African Police Services last week.


Unlike last year, Claremont Police Station saw a decrease in the number of common contact crimes. This year there were 99 reported incidents as compared to the 117 from last year.

Another drop is seen in the number of sexual crimes with a decrease of over 20% in both rape and sexual assaults.

Property-related crimes went down by more than 10% and drug-related crimes also went down by 8.6%.

However, carjacking went up by 166% with a total of five incidents compared to two from last year. Murder and attempted murder incidents also increased.


Contact crimes increased, some by reaching 100%. There were six sexual offences reported in the 2016/2017 financial year and this year the incidents increased to 12. Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm went up by 200% compared to last year with a total of 12 incidents.

Incidents under the sexual assault category also went up by 100%, with the exception of a 66.7% decrease in rape cases.

Pinelands There has been an increase in the number of contact crimes reported, putting the station at a total 12% increase, with the exception of common robberies which dropped by 27.2% compared to last year.

Rape, sexual assault offences and contact sexual offences all increased, leaving the station at a total of 22.2% for this year.

Carjacking also increased by 100%, with a total of eight cases being reported this year.

Truck hijacking also increased, with two cases this year.

All other property-related crimes went down by 9.5%, while crimes detected as a result of police action went down by 25.4%.

Rondebosch The overall crime results show an increase in most categories as compared to last year.

Although the station still maintains a record of zero murder cases, there were six more incidents of attempted murder reported this year compared to last year.

This, together with the rise in other contact crimes, puts the record of contact crimes this year at a total of 13.3% higher than the previous year.

Increases are also seen in other categories including carjacking, robbery at residential premises and robbery at non-residential properties.
