Subcouncil 18 recently held their civic awards.The awards look to honour residents within the subcouncil’s seven wards for work and time volunteered in projects run throughout their respective areas.Ward 66, which encompasses Parkwood and Ottery, parts of Grassy Park (west of Third Avenue and First Road, east of Klip Road and Perth Road, north of First Avenue and Victoria Road) and part of Lotus River, nominated three of its residents in their community who were honoured for the sterling work they have done within the community over the last 12 months.Councillor for the area, William Akim, says these residents have rendered excellent service to the community over the last 15 years. One of the nominees, Angela Adams, has been running the Busy Bee Daycare Centre for almost 20 years.“(Angela) Adams from Busy Bee has started a daycare centre from her mother’s council rental flat in Eric Walk in Parkwood Estate. Maud Petersen from Embrace Seniors was nominated for her dedication and time in caring for the seniors from the Parkwood area. Zelda Manuel from Moving Forward, also from the Parkwood area, started a dancing group for young girls, volunteering her time at the Grassy Park Police Station, as well as assisting at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court and motivating youngsters to finish their education,” he says.
