Gatesville Neighbourhood Watch in partnership with Taz Boutique and Melomed Private Hospitals treated more than 100 elderly women at a Women’s Day event at Rylands Civic Centre last Wednesday.

Fowzia Veerasamy, the event organiser, explains the annual programme aimed to honour seniors in the community and to discuss the reality of domestic violence within several homes.

She says the event was made possible by several businesses in Athlone, including Golden Dish, Pick n Spice, Pizza Time, Osman’s Spice Store and Fazlien’s.

“The response from local businesses in our community was phenomenal and they (businesses) really rallied behind this event to make it a huge success for these seniors. Councillor Aslam Cassiem and members from Rylands Public Library were also at the event for assistance,” she says.

“This year’s function was free for all the attendees, and included a special fashion show hosted by Taz Boutique. The ladies who participated in the fashion show were from our seniors’ club and this made it even more exciting to watch.

“Our main focus for this year’s event was domestic violence, which is a huge issue in many homes. We therefore had several guest speakers present to highlight the issue and who took from their time to speak to victims of abuse.”

Other items to fill up the day’s programme included a performance by Wasief Piekaan and The Pennsylvanians minstrels group.

“We are thankful to all participants who came on board to make this event possible. It is great to see the community of Gatesville unite with each other for a common cause like this, in order to assist and treat our elderly,” she adds.
