Retreat Library will be closed from the Easter weekend to prepare for upgrades that will start in April. The library will be closed for at least three months.

While the library is closed readers are allowed to use nearby libraries, including Southfield Library, Muizenberg Library and Grassy Park Library.

The upgrade is part of the City of Cape Town’s maintenance plan.

The library will get a new circulation desk, computer area and floor coverings in certain areas. The inside and outside walls of the library will be repainted. The library will also get a new book detection system and additional burglar bars to improve security.

The existing light fittings will be replaced with more energy efficient and brighter units. An internal storage area and a small meeting space for public use will be created to complement the current library hall.

The upgrades will cost about R700 000.

Belinda Walker, Mayco member for community services and special projects, says Retreat Library is one of the longest existing libraries in the city.

“We believe that this upgrade will result in a more comfortable and inviting place for families to read, study and use the internet. The hardening of our libraries against theft and vandalism is an important part of our efforts to create safe public spaces; this is why we are investing in security infrastructure such as improved burglar bars. We thank the community for their patience in this time.”
