Fourteen years later, Bergvliet Lions Club returns to Die Oog to give new life to a bench of chair it donated in 2005 on Saturday 23 February.

They sanded and varnished it, living it fresh and attractive.

And the Club says every little contribution they make is aimed at giving a long-time relief to any of their beneficiaries, hence saying after the drought and harsh climate changes, they remembered the wooden chair.

Like many of their projects, material used was funded through the monetary benefits raised from their fundraising initiatives.

This is one of the projects lined up for the year.

Sandy Roman says since this year the club is celebrating 50th anniversary, they aim to go extra mile, with key focus areas being environment.

And Die Oog is a diverse conservation area that comprising dam and wetlands, birdlife, fynbos and grassland.

“Environment is one of the five pillars of service for Lions Clubs International, so our club likes to assist here where we can. This gives us the opportunity to give back to the community in which we are operating. This year our club is carrying on with a number of projects involving Youth, Seniors, Hunger and Childhood Cancer. We have provided two bursaries at two local primary schools. We sponsored a young man to attend a Boys to Men camp held in Wellington.”

Roman explains the camp as a mentoring programme for men ages of 14 and 18 aimed at helping a boy to get in touch with what is going on his life.

She says they also provide sanitary pads to Fairmount Secondary School on a monthly basis.

Roman says it is all done through the positive support they get from the public.

“The support from the community is wonderful. Our main fundraiser is our monthly second-hand book sale held on the last Saturday of each month at the Meadowridge Park n Shop Centre. The centre management are so good to us and without their support this project would not be able to happen. The community donates books to us on a regular basis and we are extremely grateful. The club also receives donations of good second-hand household items which we are able to pass on to the needy in outlying areas. Bergvliet High School has given us new text books, school shoes and school uniforms. The shoes are distributed mainly to the rural areas where parents cannot afford to buy them.

They also support schools in the underprivileged areas outside Cape Town.

They will be celebration of the 50th Anniversary in August and would are inviting formers club members to join the day.
