“The loose flexible body and improved posture attest to the success of the Sarda formula, and Meluli’s happy mood at the end of each session is a wonderful bonus. These constitute the precious blessing to us from Sarda,” says Mathokoza Nhlapo, mother of Meluli Nhlapo, who rides horses at the SA Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) Cape Town.

Meluli and the rest of the organisation’s 180 young and adult riders will be take part in the first-ever Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Countryside Challenge in Africa next week at the Sarda Centre in Brommersvlei Road, Constantia.

Teri Smith, a senior Sarda instructor, says the idea behind this event is to give Sarda riders the opportunity to show off the skills they have achieved through their therapeutic riding classes.

Over the past 40 years, hundreds of adults and children from the greater Cape Town area who are living with physical and learning disabilities have received free therapeutic riding lessons from Sarda Cape Town. It has satellite branches in Sleepy Hollow in Noordhoek and in Sedgefield.

The event forms part of African Bank’s Community Champion Awards and was proposed and championed by African Bank staff member Stacey Baisitse.V All Sarda riders will be participating in the obstacle course from Monday 17 October to Friday 21 October between 09:00 and noon and 14:00 and 17:00 and on Saturday 22 October between 10:00 and noon. Any horse riders who do not ride at Sarda are also invited.
