Manenberg police arrested two people last week for the illegal possession of a firearm.According to Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett, police officers arrested a 44-year-old man and 30-year-old woman on Tuesday for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition when officers of the stabilisation unit worked in the policing precinct to fight gang violence and do high-density patrols as part of disruptive operations.“As they patrolled the area in Klipfontein Road, they noticed a Nissan Murano. They followed the car to Tambo Village. Officers then pulled it over and conducted a search. They found a high-powered Savage rifle with 105 rounds of ammunition in the boot of the car. This rifle will be sent for ballistic testing,” says Bennett.A case of possession of firearm and ammunition has been opened. The 44-year-old man and 30-year-old women appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.Anyone with information regarding illegal firearms and ammunition can call Manenberg Police Station on 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111. If this information leads to the successful arrest and confiscation of the firearms, he says, residents will be rewarded financially in the police’s reward scheme.
