‘Robbers’ caught in time

2017-04-18 06:00

Police vigilance on the streets may have prevented some armed robbers from their activities.

Police officers were out on patrol in the vicinity of Nita Street on Thursday when they spotted a silver Toyota Etios in the area.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Constable Carol Strauss explains that officers were doing stop-and-search operations in the area when they made the breakthrough.

“The officers stopped the car and during the search they discovered a firearm with the serial number filed off.

“They surmised that the four men, aged from 29 to 37, were armed robbers out looking for targets in the area.”

All four were arrested.

Strauss has called on residents to be aware of unknown cars driving aimlessly in their neighbourhoods.

“People should be more aware of what is happening in their streets,” she says.

“It is important to know your neighbours to make our areas safer. If you spot cars driving around and not seeming to go anywhere, make a note of it or call the police.

“Criminals may be patrolling the area to look for soft targets and it is better to be safe than sorry.

“If you are going away on holiday make sure that your neighbours know about it and keep an eye on your property. All this can play a part in increasing safety in your area.”
