Robbers hit jewellery chain

2015-11-24 06:00

Vangate Mall was rocked on Tuesday morning as robbers made off with R95 000 worth of cash and jewellery from the Sterns store.

The incident took place at 09:00. Police responded to an alarm signal and on arrival at the shopping centre warned potential patrons and residents to stay clear of the area as they combed the area in hope of tracking down the suspects.

According to Sergeant Zita Norman, Athlone police’s spokesperson, an unknown man entered the shop. It is alleged that the man had a look at the jewellery as well as a cellphone before approaching a worker.

The suspect then took out a firearm and led the worker to the back of the shop where another employee was.

A second robber then entered the shop and tied both workers up with cable ties before ransacking the safe, emptying the tills and taking jewellery. The items stolen range from jewellery, watches and cellphones to cash.

Norman says no injuries were sustained nor were any shots fired.

A case of business robbery has been opened for investigation at the Athlone police station.V Anyone with information relating to this crime can contact the Athlone police station on 021 697 9238 or 021 697 9239.
