Community members must invest in the future and well-being of the youth, says Eric Bailey, chairperson of the Sharedon Park Residents and Ratepayers’ Association.

He said this on the back of a kayaking excursion with about 20 teenagers from his area. As part of a holiday programme they spent half a day at Zandvlei Estuary Reserve and received lunch organised by the community. The event was organised by Tim Godfrey of the City of Cape Town’s sport and recreation department.

“This was really a nice thing for the youth to do. It keeps them busy and takes their minds off things. We appealed for donations to the community members and a lot of people came on board. They helped with the food and supervising the children.

“After the kayaking we just sat with the kids and we had lunch. It was a nice experience for them. They had so much fun and some of them you could see they were born rowers,” he says.

Bailey is worried about gangsters luring children into a life of crime.

“We wanted to open their minds, show them other fascinating things that they can do and to protect them as well,” he says.

A next outing is planned to Newlands Stadium.

“We want them to go experience the joy of watching a game at the stadium. Some of them have never been to the stadium.

“We are doing this to keep them busy. Our communities are affected by a lot of crime and we want to do our best to make sure that there are youth programmes and things to do so that they won’t end up doing the wrong things.

“We are pleading for any kind of donations to make our next outing a success,” says Bailey.
