Things are looking up for 13-year-old Usher Henn, an aspiring rugby player from Simon van der Stel Primary School in Wynberg.

Like many young boys, he grew up with a dream of excelling in sport.

At his tender age, he has started paving his way to success.

Thanks to being the best player in his u.13 category at the school, Usher was given the opportunity to take part in the Interprovincial Southern Rugby Tournament in Oudtshoorn where he was selected as the player of the series.

It is for these achievements that he has reportedly been awarded his Western Province colours.

This saw him scoring an opportunity to play in the Seven-a-side u.13 National Interprovincial Sevens Tournament in
Bloemfontein.

Usher says that for him rugby has become a lifestyle and one of the most important things in his life.

When Usher is not busy with academics he spends time practising and/or watching sport to get inspiration.

He says education and sport go hand in hand and he makes sure they are balanced.

“I learn from other successful players. I watch games to see what they do, and I practise. Most importantly I stay true to myself – I do not try something I know I cannot do. This makes it easy to excel because whatever I do is the best.

“I am proud of myself. I had never thought my dream would come true at this age. Representing the province was a big thing so playing at the nationals is awesome, I am sure my team will do well.”

He has been playing rugby since he was nine and has never looked back.

“When he is in doubt, Usher says he turns to his family as they are his “big
supporters”.

The school principal, Laurika Hefer, says the teachers are proud of his achievements.

Hefer also commended the teachers for their passion to support and expose the talents of their learners.

“We know these learners will go on to accomplish proud achievements and we wish them every success in the future.”
