Garlen Fredericks, a teacher at Muhammadeyah Primary School, is doing more than he is getting paid for – he runs to raise funds.

At the beginning of this year, he decided that he would take part in different races in order to help the school raise enough money to buy a school bus to transport learners.

Thus far he has run this year’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, the West Coast Marathon, The Comrades Ultra Marathon, the Cape Town 100km Ultra Marathon and the Mandela Day Marathon.

“Next up I will, God-willing and I live, be taking part in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, PetroSA Marathon, Voet van Afrika Marathon, Old Mutual Soweto Marathon and Winelands Marathon.”

Fredericks hopes to raise R400 000 by January next year to mark the school’s 90th anniversary.

He says he loves teaching as much as he loves running.

“I run on behalf of the school. It was a collective decision made in part and conceptualised together with the sports convener who is our cross-country coach. It is the joy of running and the causes I run for, as well as the associated health benefits, that keep me going. We have raised R12 000 so far and we thank everyone who has supported us.”

The bus the school is aiming to buy will assist in transporting learners to and from sporting events and other extracurricular activities.

The school has more than 700 learners, most of whom are involved in various sport codes.
