SA hosts maths olympiad

A record number of 13 countries registered for the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (Pamo) that was hosted by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) and the African Institute for Mathematical Science (Aims) in Muizenberg.

The 27th Pamo took place in Cape Town from Sunday 31 March to Saturday 6 April.

The South African team was selected from the top learners who participated in the 2018 final round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad (Samo) and other SAMF Olympiad training programmes organised by SAMF.

The learners selected were Danielle Kleyn (Gr.11) from Parel Vallei High School, Juliette Roux in (Gr.9) from Herschel Girls’ School, Alex Sinclair-Smith (Gr.9) from Westerford High School and Emmanuel Rassou (Gr.9) from South African College High School (Sacs).

This team of bright young minds went up against talented individuals from other African countries.

The girls also competed against other African girls in Pamo-G, which is the mathematics Olympiad for girls.

Pamo is an event of the African Mathematics Union (AMU) organised each year in an African country where the best pupils in Mathematics of the Secondary Education who are younger than 20-years-old, are invited to compete.

It aims to encourage mathematical talent and exchange information on curricula and teaching methods in mathematics across the African continent. This great opportunity not only opens up doors for these young “mathletes”, it also broadens their problem-solving skills.

In 2018 the South African team did extremely well at both Pamo and Pamo-G and walked away in first place in both divisions. Danielle was crowned African Queen of Mathematics last year when South Africa obtained one gold, four silver and one bronze medals.

Simpiwe Somdyala, general manager for corporate affairs at Old Mutual Limited, one of the main sponsors this year says: “Education, and particularly, improving scarce skills like mathematics and science has long been a priority focus area for us at Old Mutual.

“As a responsible business firmly anchored in Africa, we are committed to empowering the communities in which we operate and we are exceptionally proud to be able to do this through our support for this round of Pamo.”
