Construction of a raised pedestrian crossing should start next month to replace a faded and sometimes ineffective zebra crossing in AZ Berman Drive.

The crossing will be situated outside Tafelsig Primary School and is set to be completed before the City of Cape Town’s financial year end.

Ward 82 councillor and Wolfgat subcouncil chairperson, Sheval Arendse says he put the motion forward about three years ago and recently heard that the project has been approved.

While the exact date has not been set, Arendse says the project should start soon.

“They should start within a month’s time because it must be finished within the budget cycle,” says Arendse.

The project will be funded by the City of Cape Town.

“There is a big need for this because children are running across the road and there was a recent accident where a child was knocked over,” says Arendse.

The current crossing is manned by a warden. The warden will remain to assist the children in crossing the road.

Arendse says this will not be a robot crossing, but rather a raised crossing. The cost has not yet been determined.

He says the safety of the children is very important and the crossing is needed to ensure more safety as cars come speeding along the road.

The AZ Berman crossing spans two double carriage ways with a large island in the centre.

Further traffic calming measures are planned for AZ Berman Drive, Arendse says.
