Safety concerns for residents

2018-08-28 06:02

Residents living in Rondebosch East are concerned about ongoing robberies in the area.

One resident, David Luitner, says: “Many of these criminals come from other areas to do their dirty work in our community. My wife and daughters can’t even sleep at night. Every sound and movement close to our doorstep scares them. How do we keep these criminals out of the area?”

A 21-year-old suspect was arrested for house robbery in 4th Avenue, Rondebosch East, shortly after 12:00 last Friday.

However, police are currently still searching for the other two suspects involved in the same incident.

The arrest comes after residents alerted Lansdowne police to a man running towards Imam Haron Road with a firearm in his hand.

Police responded to the call and gave chase. The suspect was caught shortly after. On investigation it was revealed that the suspect had committed a house robbery – this after a resident lodged a complaint on the same day.

The complainant explained that he was pulling out of his driveway when he was approached by three armed men, who pushed him inside the house to begin their robbery.

About R10 000 in cash was stolen from the property before the suspects fled in a gold Toyota Yaris.

The one suspect from Delft, who still in police custody, was charged for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and house robbery.

In another incident, last Tuesday, police arrested three suspects in connection with a murder that occurred in Sergeant Road on Monday 28 July. The arrest came after Lansdowne police received information from an anonymous resident that three suspects were last seen with the deceased before he was killed.

Police found a 35-year-old man in a pool of blood with his feet and hands tied up and his throat slit. The victim, who was looking after a premises as a security guard, was declared dead on the scene.

A 22-year-old woman and two men, both 28, where arrested and charged in connection with the murder. The three suspects appeared for their first hearing in the Wynberg Magstrate’s Court last Thursday and remain in custody.

Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka from Lansdowne Police Station urges residents to be vigilant when leaving and entering their homes and to secure all valuable items on their properties.

“House robberies have raised a concern in the Rondebosch East area. We have noticed that the last three incidents in the area occurred in the early hours of the morning and entrance was gained by removing the glass in front windows while residents were asleep.

“Lansdowne police and the community policing forum are taking a step further by inviting all residents to attend a public meeting on Tuesday 11 September at 19:00 at The Venue in Imam Haron road, to tackle the issue.”

V Anyone with information that can lead to more arrests in the two cases should call Lansdowne Police Station on 021 700 9000 or 082 576 2804.
