Keeping the children off the streets and active through sport and healthy play was the key driving force for a local organisation.

The Cape Flats YMCA hosted a three-day programme aimed at children aged between 7 and 14, with around 100 children attending from Monday to Wednesday.

“The theme of the event is safety and awareness. We wanted to make sure the children had environmental awareness on how to feel safe and when to say something. We also had a self-defence and self-esteem session to educate the children,” says Berenice Roman of the YMCA.

The talks included substance abuse awareness as well.

Games included dominoes, 30 Seconds, Uno, cards and other board games, as well as soccer, cricket and other entertainment.

The children were all invited from the surrounding areas.

Included in the invitation was Fluid FC from Tafelsig.

Debbie Solomons of the club says she and Roman met by chance and she was glad to have the opportunity to bring some of her children to the event on Wednesday.
