Different law enforcement stakeholders from Woodstock joined hands to establish a new community safety plan for the year on Saturday 24 February.

Chaired by the Department of Community Safety, the Woodstock police, community policing forum, neighbourhood watch and residents reportedly formulated a plan that is aimed at making their area a safer environment.

According to the police spokesperson, Sergeant Hilton Malila, this safety plan will be revised and revisited every three months to evaluate its effectiveness.

He says vagrancy is one of the issues that will be prioritised.

He adds: “During the programme layout for this coming financial year, we will also look intensively into drug trafficking and abusers. Property-related crime and contact crimes will also be addressed through this multidisciplinary approach of all available forces in the precinct.”

He also says it was decided that community-based projects will be implemented in an attempt to address crime “from a social point of view”.

“It has been said that lot of people turn to crime due to the socio-economic circumstances.”

The station commander, Colonel Sizwe Mpindwa, says he is very pleased with the turnout for the planning session. He says it is important to have community commitment in order to succeed in fighting crime.
