Safety sign for swimmers

New signage to caution swimmers at Three Anchor Bay is set to be installed next month.

While not unsafe for swimmers, there is at times a higher risk to swimmers at this beach due to bacteria in the water.

The City of Cape Town is in the process of developing new and more informative signage that will inform residents so they can make their own decisions, explains Johan van der Merwe, Mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning.

“It is not unsafe to swim at Three Anchor Bay but rather it is important to note that at times high bacteria counts are registered and as such the possible health risk is greater at Three Anchor Bay than at other locations,” he says.

“Three Anchor Bay has higher levels at times because of a combination of the coastal geography that traps water in the little bay – with little circulation, the high kelp load and the presence of more than one stormwater outlet.”

However, there is little to no risk to people enjoying other activities such as launching kayaks and surf-skis, Van der Merwe says. There is only some risk for people who fully immerse themselves in the water for a length of time, such as swimmers.

The signage is expected to be installed by the end of April.
