Santos upstaged in league opener

Glendene United FC settled an old score on Thursday night after they saw off Santos 2-1 in a pulsating ABC Motsepe first round derby at Thornton sports field.

Santos, under a new guard and former Bafana coach Gordon Igesund, held their nerve but could not maintain their dominance.

The visitors stormed back and soon pressured the hosts after Luyanda Niyane opened the score for them. Tyren Arendse lifted Santos’ confidence with a superb goal but his efforts were too late as Sinesipho Ntumbakana propelled Glendene to victory.

Hout Bay United FC defeated Sizwe United 1-0 on Friday night at Nyanga Stadium.

Gavin Hammers, the prolific goal machine of the visitors, denied the hosts home turf joy with an excellent goal.

Grassy Park dumped the Magic 3-2 at Solo sports field on Friday night.

D&G Orient beat Ikapa Sporting 1-0 in Manenberg with Robert Soloms in top-class form when he steered his team to a three-point victory.

Ajax Cape Town thrashed Atlantic Nacional 2-0 at the Portuguese sports ground.

Colin Ryan and Zaakie Allie, the dangerous strikers of Ajax, whipped up more misery for a defeated Atlantic team.

Jomo Powers were forced to a 2-2 draw against Barcelona FC at the Robinvale stadium.

Clement Fortuin and Clayton Davids scored for the hosts while Mohau Molehe and Lefa Wise scored for Barca.

SAB Safa Cape Town leagueSilver Spurs narrowly beat Junction Rovers 3-2 in an opening SAB Safa Cape Town league encounter at Hickory Astro Turf on Friday night.

The entertaining derby between the two foes was challenging with both teams not willing to surrender.
