About 150 divers from UCT are working tirelessly, preparing for their 24-hour participation in the Two Oceans Aquarium’s I&J Ocean Exhibit at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday 9 March.

The day-long marathon scuba dive will be an attempt to raise both funds for the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) and awareness about the issues affecting ocean life. They aim to raise about R24 000 and they are appealing to the public to support the initiative.

Explaining how they are planning to make a success of the day, Diver Kapish Soma says they have for the past few months been training in various ways including doing diving courses and their regular training.

He says it is not as difficult as it sounds as they will be taking it in turns, with each dive lasting for an hour.“Its an exciting venture for us. We all prepare for it in advance.”

Soma says most of the divers are in their 20s and fit for the challenge, and support has kept growing since they started three years ago. They run promotions to spread the word to ensure people understand their message and the importance of protecting marine life.“Plastic is one of the most dangerous elements in the environment that harm lots of species in the sea. Through this awareness we hope we can make people see the need to stop using plastic and consider the use of reusables like paper bags and save the environment.”V To donate towards the initiative visit:
