Saving, at what cost?

2018-02-20 06:00

I have to admit that I was quite taken aback by your column From the Editor’s Pen (“Let’s make every drop count”, People’s Post, 6 February). For me it highlighted in a nutshell why we are being hit so hard by this current drought – education.

As end users, it s all very well and good for us to strive to cut our visible consumption, but how much thought are we giving to what we do?

Take for example the use paper plates and cups. There is a cost there that people are unaware of. This cost, while minimal in expense to our pockets has great repercussions that we need to be aware of. The costs are many. By using disposable crockery we are creating more waste; and then there is a the cost in terms of how much water was used to make the plates and cups, then there is the extra cost of pollution to transport these disposable items.

Where are they coming from?

Without having the exact numbers to hand I would say the damage created far outweighs the short term gain. Here is something to think about. It takes almost 4F to produce a single sheet of paper. So what is actually been saved? It would seem nothing. At the end of the day these are the questions that we should all start to learn to ask ourselves.

Is this really helping?

If we are not sure we should take the time to educate ourselves and ask, what is the cost? Not financially, but more importantly, environmentally. At the end of the day we are all in this together. Ultimately we all share the responsibility.
