The music from Mike Rossi’s new album is coming to town on Sunday at 19:00.

The Kaleidoscope Cafe in Claremont is hosting the launch of his new recording Take Another Five which is dedicated to the memory of jazz legend Dave Brubeck and Nelson Mandela.

Sax man Rossi, from Mowbray, says this was a very exciting recording with musical styles ranging from South African township styles to hard bop and modal to Latin as well as contemporary grooves.

“It’s a sense of my love for a variety of styles,” say Rossi, who is a professor in Jazz and Woodwinds at the South African College of Music at UCT.

“The recording also features one of the top rhythm sections in South Africa that includes Andrew Ford (piano), Charles Lazar (acoustic bass) and Kevin Gibson (drums).

“Willie Haubrich joins me in the brass section on trombone but another exciting part is featuring some of the new generation of young guns on trumpet.

“Marco Maritz, originally from Stellenbosch, has been impressing music lovers for a while and is part of the national youth band.

“Darren English from Strandfontein is on the verge of an international breakthrough after studying in America and releasing his own debut recording to rave reviews and getting a Grammy nomination.

“With these talents featuring, it’s easy to realise why this recording was so exciting.”
