The provincial department of education has slammed allegations of racism that followed a recent resignation of Rustenberg Girls Junior School teacher, Nozipho Mthembu.Mthembu reportedly resigned in September this year allegedly following internal procedures concerning her work.Debbie Schäfer, the provincial minister of education says: “I note the statement by Western Cape ANC education spokesperson, Theo Olivier. As usual, their point of departure is that if a person of colour is dismissed, it must be racism. He has clearly made no attempt to find out the facts in this matter. Olivier says they are ‘dismayed at the unclarified role’ of Natalie Maimane. If her role is unclarified, what exactly are they dismayed about?“Out of respect for her privacy, these have not been disclosed,” says Schäfer.According to Schäfer’s statement the matter was taken to CCMA where the school admitted to the wrongdoing. However, she says the action was due to the issue being dealt with by the school governing body, who are not particularly experts in handling human resource matters. She explains that the SGB took action on their hands because Mthembu was their employee, and not directly employed by the department of education.
