In celebration of their 38th anniversary year and the 100th year Mandela Day celebration, Portland High School welcomed national minister of tourism, Derek Hanekom, to a special assembly as part of their year-long celebrations on Wednesday last week.

Hanekom was escorted in by members of the school’s drilling squad, which was followed by a rendition of the national anthem and a poem from a learner.

Deon Maart, a teacher at the school, says the celebrations were made even more special by the fact that their 38th anniversary coincided with Mandela’s centenary.

The hall was filled with blue and yellow Happy Birthday balloons, in line with the school colours.

Hanekom was a minister in the first Mandela Cabinet and shared some memories of his time with the former president.

“You have met Madiba many times. You have seen pictures, and his smile is who he is. We all have a bit of Madiba in us. He fought for all of us to be free and it must make him so proud to see this, that it was not in vain,” he said.

He thanked them for their warm welcome and encouraged the children to stay away from social ills.

“I know that in Mitchell’s Plain there is a lot of gangsterism and drug dealing. Those of you sitting here who are part of gangs may think that is a big deal – it is not,” he said.

The school will host celebrations throughout the year.
