Sea Point High robbed

2019-06-11 06:00

A 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection to an armed robbery at Sea Point High School on Wednesday 5 May.

According to police, six cellphone covers believed to have been stolen at the school during exams were found at the boy’s home in Philippi East during a search operation.

The boy was identified through CCTV footage when he and is accomplice(s) apparently entered a classroom while exams where in session.

According to provincial education minister Debbie Schäfer two armed men entered the school through a fence. “The perpetrators allegedly assaulted an educator with a gun and made off with 50 cellphones. The educator has sustained an injury to her face and is seeking medical attention,” she said.

A counsellor and a psychologist have been deployed to the school.

Schäfer said she has requested that the police add the case to the Watching Brief Lists. “I am genuinely concerned that criminals have become so brazen that they enter school premises on a busy road, in broad daylight, and that not even a strong security presence, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage on fencing serve as a deterrent.

“Our schools are meant to be places of safety where learners and educators feel secure; where they can realise their potential and develop the skills and values they need to lead successful lives.”

Schäfer said that communities should report any suspicious activity to the police or the Safe Schools Programme.V To report call 0800 45 46 47.
