Sea Point pool closes for repairs

2018-04-03 06:00

Repair work at the Sea Point swimming pool is set to get underway on Monday 9 April and is the latest round of repairs to the facility following damage caused by a winter storm last year.

The City of Cape Town will close the Sea Point swimming pool for seven to eight weeks to finalise repairs to the facility’s infrastructure that was damaged during a storm in June.

The work will include major repairs to the sea wall railing, the fibre lining of the baby pool and the brick paving that was washed out by the storm, at a cost of R797 000, explains Mayco member for safety, security and social services, JP Smith.

“Between June and November last year, numerous other storm-related repairs were completed at the Sea Point swimming pool. This included the replacement of damaged pool tiles, replacement of paving bricks, replacement of the gate motor and seawater pumps, as well as repairs to the electricity box and ablution block. This was done at a cost of R247 000.”

The swimming pool will be closed to the public from Monday 9 April and the repairs are expected to be completed by the end of May.

Bathers will be able to use the Long Street swimming pool instead.

The pool has the following hours:

. 10:00 to 16:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays

. 07:00 to 16:00 on Tuesdays (10:00 to 14:00 exclusively for women)

. 07:00 to 16:00 on Fridays

. 17:00 to 19:00 daily for swimming clubs

Smith adds: ‘The Sea Point swimming pool is our most popular facility in terms of visitor numbers. It is currently also the only pool that is open year-round because we are able to utilise seawater. We will do everything we can to ensure that the repairs are completed as soon as possible so that the facility can be reopened for use by the public and we thank users for their patience during this period.”
