Search for missing medals

2017-12-19 06:00

A man from Bergvliet needs help finding his father’s medals that were stolen from their lounge wall.

Ted Lawrence says his father fought in both World Wars as a British soldier and he received several medals for his service, but all have been stolen.

“These medals were framed and displayed on our lounge wall and are the only things missing, so burglary is most unlikely. These medals are of great sentimental value. They were the only tangible thing we had to remember my father, now they are gone,” says Lawrence.

His father earned most of the campaign medals plus the Distinguished Conduct Medal. This medal is second only to the Victoria Cross and is for bravery in the face of the enemy. Oak Leaves were awarded twice and he also received the Meritorious Service Medal.

Lawrence says he went to the police station to report the theft, but the officer on duty was not very keen to help them. “The matter was reported to the police but there was no police action. They told me to come with the names of three witnesses. The witnesses whose names I gave were not contacted, but I was told by a police officer that there are six unregistered medal and coin dealers in neighbouring areas.

“I can only hope, possibly in vain, that the police contacted at least some of the alleged medal and coin dealers. I have not lost hope, I know we will find his medals. They are not so common here and very few people have them. We are hoping that we will get help,” he says.

Co-owner of Foxhole Medals, Adrian Ellard, says medals such as these are not very common. “I will try and look, maybe someone might try to sell them. I might be quiet for some time, but I will keep looking and see if anything matching them comes up. It might take a long time before they are in the market but they will come up if someone tries to sell them,” he says.
