Kommetjie police and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) are searching for a 22-year-old man who went missing at sea on Sunday. The local NSRI duty crew were alerted, through police reports, of an adult male who had reported to a local police station that he and a fellow fisherman had encountered problems at sea. He reportedly told police his companion had not come ashore after their canoe capsized. The incident took place near Soetwater on Sunday night.Ian Klopper, NSRI Kommetjie station commander, says the institute launched a total of four sea rescue craft, two from Hout Bay, a rescue vehicle and divers as the search for the victim kicked off. Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services and its dive unit, WC Government Health EMS, a Skymed rescue helicopter and the SA Police Service also responded.“On arrival on the scene an extensive sea, air and shoreline search, including four sea rescue craft, the Skymed helicopter conducting sea and air search patterns and fire divers and NSRI rescue swimmers conducting free-dive sweeping line search in the water, has revealed no sign of the missing fisherman. Police have opened an investigation and a police dive unit search operation is ongoing,” says Klopper.
