The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) have confirmed on Thursday 27 February that a search was under way for at least nine people suspected to be missing at sea.

It is suspected that an inflatable boat, carrying an undisclosed number of passengers, capsized in the early hours of the morning somewhere between Clifton and Oudekraal.

Craig Lambinon, the spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says: “A semi-submerged inflatable boat was found drifting two nautical miles offshore of Mouille Point.”

NSRI teams from Hout Bay, Bakoven and Table Bay are currently engaged in a search operation.

“A number of people have come ashore, reportedly from the capsized boat, and are being attended to. It is not yet clear if all of the nine people (still unaccounted for) are missing,” says  Lambinon.

Emergency services are assisting with the search, focused on the area stretching three nautical miles offshore and the boat will be towed to the police seaboard line in Cape Town Port.
