Seeking help to fund an dancing dream

2016-09-27 06:00

All dancers have big dreams, but one Kalk Bay dancer may have his dream of performing on international stages come true.

Eric Biko has been afforded the opportunity to represent his country in Austria and a chance to receive South African colours.

But with his mother working as a domestic worker, the Grade 10 learner at Ocean View High School is in desperate need of a helping hand.

Biko, along with his team “Virtual mindz”, has been chosen to represent the country at the Hip-hop Unite World Championship in Austria.

“I don’t specifically have a certain style of dance, because I love learning all styles. The styles that I do find myself doing and feeling a lot is b-boy (breakdancing), popping and of course new school hip-hop,” he says.

An Out of Africa Dance Academy student, Biko started dancing at the age of six. “I loved every minute of it. I stopped dancing around the age of 10 because of travelling challenges. I would still dance every day at home, because it was a way of expressing myself. It’s also helped me stay away from all the bad things happening on the streets, like drugs and alcohol,” he says.

However, in order for Biko to follow his dreams, he needs to raise R25 000 to cover the cost of travelling to the event.

“Dancing has impacted me in a great way and helps me to be more focused and disciplined. I’m from a small community and have been living in Kalk Bay since birth. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I want to make my community proud. Everyone is trying to support me, but the costs are very high and I’m struggling to get what I need. I hope people can help me turn my dream in to a reality.”
