The Young Ideas Senior Club based in Strandfontein has been active for two years. Every Wednesday the members get together to do a variety of activities.

The club hosted a “bring and share” on Wednesday 11 July. Seniors gathered to share snacks and dance. A Young Ideas member, Edna Ebden (82), was given a birthday celebration on the day of the club’s weekly meet-up.

“The aim of Young Ideas is to get seniors in the community much more involved. Not to be sitting at home and to actually enjoy their free time,” says Young Ideas Senior Club organiser, Martha Chippendale.

“I had to choose between two names that I had decided on. When I asked the rest of the members to choose between the Young Ones or Young Ideas. The members told me that Young Ideas Senior Club was the better choice,”says Chippendale.

The diverse activities that the seniors incorporate every Wednesday get them moving when they come together to enjoy themselves.

The first Wednesday of each month is a “bring and braai”.

The second Wednesday is a market day, “The market day is where seniors would get the money from what they have sold and from that profit made, R10 goes to the organisation towards funds,” Chippendale explains.

The third Wednesday is dedicated to arts and crafts. Each month an additional R30 is given to the organisation for funds.

This upcoming August, in Women’s Month, the hall will be given free to the seniors’ club as they host a “bring and share”.

The seniors’ club now consists of more than 46 members.

“Come up to the club and enjoy yourself,” says Chippendale.

Aerobics are done every Wednesday to keep the seniors moving.

The scheduled times for the seniors’ club are from 10:00 to 13:00 every Wednesday. Ages 45 and up are welcome to join the club.

The seniors’ future plans consist of a soup kitchen and a sports day. V Contact Martha Chippendale on 078 977 5969 or Michael Mitchell on 076 723 2407
