Getting the look you want is now only a click away thanks to a Newlands resident who has designed an application that is taking the beauty industry by storm.

Managing director of Primu Infotech Thuli Hlongwane launched the Prim-U App that makes it easy for clients to book for their pampering sessions without wasting time or moving off their couch.

Hlongwane is no stranger to the information and technology world. She has over 20 years experience in the industry and has worked for various companies including Old Mutual, Woolworths and Pearson South Africa, to mention but a few.

This technology platform, Prim-U, is available nationwide. It connects salon or spa owners with capacity to entrepreneurs or freelancer providers in massage beauty nails (referred to as primlancers) to offer their services to customers looking for good quality services at competitive prices, excellent customer service that will promote customer loyalty and a location that will assure convenience to freelancers and their customers.

Hlongwane believes one should not struggle to get the services they want, and the app is the best tool to get the best services at your fingertips.

Fuelled by the love of convenience and not being so much of a fan of being in long queues in the salon or just getting out to get the services drove her to start this app.

“I’m not the person to stand in queues and I don’t like being inconvenienced. Being in the salon and waiting for long and not knowing when you will get the service is just not for me. I love a good massage from time to time. So, with that in mind, I had to think of something that will make my life easier and still get the service that I want and that gave birth to the app,” says Hlongwane.

The app has been running as a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) since last year and they are yet to launch it officially. The app is available on Google Play store, IOS and on the website. They went live with an updated version a few weeks ago and they will be training about 150 of their service providers on the new platform. Through the app, a client can book a nail therapist, make-up artist or hairdresser close to where they live as matching is based on geographic location. “The idea is to save as much time and get the best service closer to you. The app will connect you with the service provider closer to you and you get things done quickly. The app is for everyone and it will make things easy while maintaining your best look.

“This platform will benefit the already established businesses as well as freelancers (prim-lancers) to maximise their profits by exposing them to new and returning customers. The allocated space for salons and spas will also be better utilised by making space available to prim-lancers during the periods that they are not busy or providing a service to their own customers or after hours.

“The prim-lancers can also work flexible hours and take appointments at a convenient time for their customers,” she says.

Though it might seem easy for her because of experience, Hlongwane says it is not easy and there is so much work that still needs to be done. For her, it was also tricky as this was the first and she didn’t have other beauty apps that she can use as a reference.

“Now we see other people are coming with apps similar to this one. I didn’t have someone to look up to and I’m glad that it worked. The app is gaining momentum,” she says.
