There’s a new option for learners looking for a career on the high seas.

In Woodstock the SA Maritime School and Transport College is a further education and training college, currently registered with the Department of Education and the Transport Education and Training Authority.

The latest of three branches, the Cape Town branch has just celebrated their first graduation ceremony at the beginning of June.

Principal Michelle Fitt says the facility is very proud to host their first graduation ceremony and they would like to make more young people aware of the options available to them in the maritime industry.

“We offer programmes from NQF levels one to five in transport and related programmes. We also enjoy accreditation with SA Sailing (SAS) who endorse our sailing programmes from deck hand through to yacht master.

“There is training for both full- and part-time learners and we have also successfully completed learnership programs with major blue chip clients operating within terminals in all major ports in Southern Africa.”

For the past 30 years the school has provided quality training in the maritime sector.

At present the school offers a courses in international trade and transport; freight handling (warehousing and distribution); shipping practice (ships operation and agencies); custom compliance and freight forwarding and a diploma in freight logistics.

“Learners who wish to embark on an educational journey with us would need to have the subjects of maths (literacy or pure), geography, business studies, accounting and physical science to study in this field,” continues Fitt.

“Other courses that we offer are fork-lift training and for sailing there are programmes from deck hand to yacht master on offer and we also offer driver training for code 8 and 10.”
