The unnamed Kalk Bay steps will officially be named the Manila Steps.

This will take place at a ceremony, held on Sunday 28 October at 13:45 at the Holy Trinity Church Hall in Main Road, Kalk Bay.

The City of Cape Town’s executive deputy mayor, Ian Neilson, will attend the Manila Steps naming ceremony and blessing of the Filipino burial ground in Kalk Bay.

The ceremony is in honour of the Filipino settlers who made their homes in Kalk Bay in the mid-1800s.

Many of the first settlers were sailors who jumped ship while others arrived later after fleeing a revolution in their homeland.
