Sharing stories on Women’s Day

2016-08-02 06:00

As 2016 celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Women’s March on Pretoria, Woman Zone is celebrating women in literature with a Story Cafe @ Woman Zone.

The event will run on Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Monday 8 August at the Women’s Library on the ground floor of Artscape next to the box office.

Presenting a number of themes – Memoirs and Mothers on Friday, Heritage Food on Saturday and Healing our society through writing on Monday – each day also offers aspiring storytellers an opportunity to tell their story at the open mic session after the launches and panel discussions.

Under the theme Memoirs and Mothers, authors have recorded their experiences to create works that do not only resonate with each individual, but also show how words can be healing and cathartic.

Memories shape lives and, intertwined with the influence of mothers, this journey can be both joyful and painful.

A children’s storytelling session on Saturday invites moms and dads to listen with their children.

This will be followed by the theme Heritage Food. With influences from so many diverse cultures, a melting pot of delicious dishes has built bridges through local communities.

Capetonians live on the Spice Route and well-known authors use these ingredients to create dishes that are memorable.

Healing our society through writing on Monday will speak to finding solutions to violence in society. Some brave women have written about their experiences and explore the healing and cathartic aspects of this and discuss solutions.
