Shawco launches Blue Monday

2018-09-25 06:00

The Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation will officially launch its Blue Monday campaign on Monday 1 October.

With the campaign, the organisation hopes to extend its rural footprint, deepen social consciousness, increase student and community volunteerism, and enhance the ways in which people can contribute to meaningful giving. “Give us a heart and let’s spread the love,” says a statement released recently.

Shawco is a student-run non-profit organisation based at UCT that seeks to improve the quality of life for individuals in developing communities.

“Our aim is to promote responsible citizenship in the South African context through health, education and social entrepreneurship initiatives. We partner with UCT as well as with international students who help drive these initiatives. Currently we serve 5000 primary healthcare patients weekly and assist in improving education to 1300 students.”

The organisation is celebrating its 75th anniversary and says during this time, the organisation has touched countless lives in communities affected by poverty.

Through the Blue Monday campaign, the colour blue will be prominently displayed in all its communications.

The organisation says the colour stands for hope and reliance. “Through the collective collaboration of volunteerism and giving, we are changing the Western Cape, and aim to improve Southern Africa for all who call it home. Stand with us!”

The organisation has planned a number of activities as a build-up to the official launch.

These include director, Gavin Joachims, running in the recent Cape Town Marathon in order to raise funds for the organisation.

There was also a climb to the top of Lion’s Head on Monday 24 September, broadcast on television and radio throughout the country and social media world-wide.

The organisation encourages everyone attending the launch to wear blue in support of the initiative, with their goal being to increase awareness and support for Shawco. V Call Shawco on 021 406 6740 or visit Facebook: Shawco
