A Maitland family says they were left shocked after barely escaping a taxi collision on the morning of Wednesday 31 January.
James Strachan says he and his family were driving towards Salt River, near Koeberg and Berkley roads, when he saw a taxi speeding behind him. He immediately swerved off the road, allowing it to pass.

He says the taxi overtook him and collided with a light motor vehicle, resulting in multiple collisions. About seven people were reportedly injured.

“He definitely was speeding. And he admitted his brakes failed. Why was his vehicle not serviced properly? How is it possible he could be transporting passengers?”asks Strachan.

His wife Mariah adds: “We could have crashed as well if it were not for my husband’s excellent driving skills. The driver told me and my husband he could not help it as the brakes failed. We are shocked and angry about this.”

She explains that when the taxi crashed into the other vehicles, the passenger door fell off and people were flung out of the taxi. She says two passengers were seriously injured, while another two who also fell out of the taxi were left severely traumatised and crying.

Maitland station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Sizwe Mpindwa, has confirmed the accident and says investigations are underway.

He could not give details about any charges or the condition of the patients.
