Shots that have been raining down on Bokmakierie have now claimed the life of 11-year-old Rimeez Caetano.

According to Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman, there was a shoot-out between the G-Unit and the Hard Livings gangs on Sunday.

G-Unit gang members were shooting from Bokmakierie Street and in 8th Avenue to HL gang members who were shooting each other.

Caetano, who was playing soccer in the road, was shot in the left side of his chest. The bullet exited from his abdomen. He was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital where he died.

The Janaza was held in Bokmakierie late yesterday afternoon after his body was released.

Athlone community policing forum chairperson Aziza Kannemeyer says shooting has gone on in the area unabated.

“We had over 40 shots fired in the Bokmakierie area in an hour and a half [on Sunday] and only one police van came out. Everything is extremely volatile here,” she says.

Caetano attended Hazendal Primary School and participated in the walking bus which was established in the area a few months ago.

“We are all completely devastated. There is a gang war between the HLs and Americans which stirred this. This endless shooting has been going on for the last four days and we are just not getting the support from the necessary stakeholders,” says Nicole Williams, chairperson of the Hazendal/ Bokmakierie walking bus.V Anyone with information about the shooting can call detective Constable Keith Poggenpoel on 021 697 9238/9.
