Four suspected robbers were arrested on Friday 24 November. Another one died in hospital after being shot in the head by police.

The arrested men, aged between 28 and 35, had allegedly robbed a shop in Foundry Road, Salt River at noon.

The robbers fled the scene using a white VW Golf 4 car after spotting Woodstock police arriving.

Thanks to the help of the flying squad, the suspects were arrested on the Goodwood bridge on the N7.

Woodstock police spokesperson Sergeant Hilton Malila, says: “During a high-speed chase along Liesbeek Parkway, the occupants of the car fired several shots at the officers, but no-one was injured.

“The car was stopped on the Goodwood bridge at the intersection, where the suspects fired shots in the direction of the police. The officers returned fire and subsequently injured one of the suspects in the head.

“The suspect received medical attention on the scene and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.”

He says the arrested men had a 9mm pistol and a .38 Special revolver and an amount of money that had been stolen from the shop.

Malila says they face charges related to armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition.
