In celebration of Mandela Day observed last Tuesday, the management of Liberty Promenade Mall hosted a food collection drive in the centre’s food court.

Their aim was to collect non-perishable items to donate to the local Meals on Wheels organisation.

The management team previously visited Meals on Wheels, based in Portlands, and learned that the organisation feeds up to 9000 residents every Tuesday and Thursday.

In the spirit of Mandela Day, they encouraged the shopping centre’s suppliers, store owners, staff and shoppers to donate non-perishable food items, including samp, beans, lentils, split peas, sugar, coffee, tea, long-life milk, flour, Weetbix, mealie meal, pasta, peanut butter, pilchards, rice, canned tomatoes and baked beans.

The donation drive was organised by the centre management team and made possible together with local sponsors Scan Retail, Fidelity ADT, E Williams, Isilumko, Tarmix Pavers, Eden Landscaping, Cummings Plumbers, Zest, Centre Design, Vodacom, Legal Wise, Meycom, Smart Ash, Panarottis, Info Scan, Cell C and Shoe City.

The items donated are worth more than R25 000.

“It is truly gratifying that, together with our kind sponsors and tenants, we are able to make a small but real contribution to improving the quality of life for some of those around us,” says Dorothea Wright, Liberty Promenade’s general manager.

“We are proud to be associated with these organisations who do so much to uplift those most in need on a daily basis.”
