Show forges unity

The Ward 56 Got Talent programme planned for the month of April will do more than showcase the raw and hidden talents of this community.

It is touted as the unifier of the people of Factreton, Kensington and Maitland.

“The idea is to welcome all people from the entire ward,” says Cheslyn Steenberg, the project’s co-ordinator.

Steenberg says the project will encourage social cohesion and community interaction between the sects in the community. Moreover, he says, it will lay the platform to foster sustainable relations.

According to Steenberg, the project’s initial name of “Factreton’s Got Talent” had to be changed as it seemed to divide the community, alienating the rest of the ward.

“Noting that we are one, we, in consultation with our ward councillor (Helen Jacobs), decided to change the name to Ward 56 Got Talent,” says Steenberg.

Community organisations like Play Sport 4 Life and the Kensington Community Policing Forum, as well as local businesses, Jacobs and the City of Cape Town, are now involved in the annual project.

With the talent show, organisers also hope to strip the area of gangsterism.

“It will benefit the community by slowly but surely removing the stigma of gangsterism that hangs over our community. You will be amazed at what good can come from this community,” says Steenberg.

He explains that relations between neighbours and families can be improved “because now we are forced in one space and we are cheering on our favourite act or acts, and thus it becomes a time for relationship building”.

He is confident that the organising team, known as the Frontiers, will execute a professional programme to ensure a smooth event.

The programme will run over four weeks at the Factreton Community Hall, starting on Saturday 7 April with the registration process. This will be followed by auditions on Saturday 14 April before semi-final auditions on Saturday 21 April and the finals the next day. Although no prizes will be awarded to winners, organisers are hopeful the community will come out in large numbers to support the show.

All talents and ages are welcome to take part in the show.
